Met a young couple yesterday at the Tillamook Farmer’s Market bicycling south to San Francisco– Brittley and Donny– who said they were planning to avoid the steep climb to Cape Lookout by staying on 101. We decided to do the same, and found a beautiful country route, then back out to the coast via Sandlake.
Hard to describe the joy we felt coming over the last hill and descending into Pacific City. Suddenly there was an expanse of white sand, people and places to eat and shop… And best of all, it was warm! I immediately spied an RV resort across from the beach and went directly to the office. We got the last tent campsite, $27. (Cape Lookout, where we had reservations, was $32!). The RV resort is huge and noisy but super clean and well-kept with hot, free showers and even a heated pool! There are surfers and little kids and folks of all ages and a party atmosphere… We felt embraced by all of it.
Had a delicious dinner at Pelican Brewery & Pub, where you can literally sit in the sand and drink a beer (they brew a great IPA). After dinner we took hot showers and I was in my sleeping bag by 8:30. There were fireworks on the beach last night, I could hear them and see colored flashes through my rainfly. I loved hearing the squeals and shrieks of the little kids around us. A nice way to doze off…
We’re taking a much-needed rest day here. We’ll sit on the beach, wash some clothes, go to the grocery store, nap and I’ll ice my aching knees. I’m a little worried about another steep climb just south of here, which will come up right away tomorrow, but plan to exercise the “be here now” approach and enjoy staying put today.

sounds amazing. we ran into Stef yesterday while we were dropping off the pane d’amore eggs (7 dozen!) and he said your knees were giving you a hard time. a little rest should soothe those crabby knees–i hope. xoxo
Cheers!! Beer and beach do seem to go so well together – many days like that in my memory book.
Have I got some shoes to recommend to you – good for knees, posture, and, apparently, every little thing that ails my lower half. The “anti-shoes” with the rounded souls. Jack and I each bought a pair here in Victoria, and are working very different muscles than we usually use in walking and standing.
Hope you are enjoying your day of rest – we are having same in Victoria. Mine will include a deep massage in about an hour. Coincidentally, Barry and Channie are up here, too, same hotel, so we have been spending some time together.
Just caught up on your last few days – so glad you’re posting!
