It’s July 4th and we find ourselves in the very heart of the American recreational experience — camped in a 150-site RV resort chock full of motorhomes, campers, pickup trucks, mini vans, kids, liquor bars, outdoor grills, dogs, and commercial consumption in all forms. American flags fly from tent awnings. Ice chests overflow with food and soda. Folks drive from their campsite to the mini mart 3 blocks away.
Somehow I love that we landed here on this day of all days. As far as I know, we are the only bicycle travelers. I think of Willie and Kat and the idea that we are ambassadors in some quiet way for an alternative. There are a dozen small children camped close around us; perhaps they have noticed our bikes. Maybe their parents have commented that we’re crazy, or maybe they’ve admired us. No matter… We are here, and somehow that pleases me, on this birthday celebration of our country… a country that has shown remarkable passion for independence, for striking out and finding fierce spirit in the midst of fierce challenge — in the face of wars and oil spills, through exploring wilderness and sometimes losing our way.
Because we’re on bicycles, I feel mindful of acting with consideration, respect, and gratitude. Ironically, perhaps(?), I feel especially tolerant of those around me making other choices. If I was in a car, I have a feeling I’d be resentful, trapped in a lifestyle that does not feel right for me.
On this Independence Day, I am honored to represent a little piece of that spirit here at Cape Kiwanda RV Resort — traveling on our bicycles, alongside our fellow campers, here in the land of America. Thank you, RV’ers, for driving safely and sharing the highway. May we all travel together, side by side.
